SPIDER VEIN REMOVAL
Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive procedure that treats uncomplicated spider and reticular veins to reduce and remove their appearance.
Please note that during your first treatment you may only receive 1 vial to see how your body reacts to the product. If there is no reaction, you may receive an additional 4 vials 48 hours after the initial treatment

1st treatment: 1 vial only to see how your body responds to the treatment
2nd treatment: 48 hours after the 1st treatment. May do an additional 4 vials at that time.
3rd treatment: 6 weeks from the 1st treatment. The average person will need an average of 3 additional treatments spaced 6 weeks apart.
-
Must wear 20-40mm compression stockings on all the time for 1 week post treatment. (Compression is so important because the veins have to collapse and adhere together in order to die and this can only be achieved via compression)
-
Must wear compression stocking during the day for week 2 but can remove them at bedtime.
-
Do not shave your legs for 3-4 days after treatment
-
Avoid hot baths or Jacuzzis for 3-4 days after treatment.
-
Avoid strenuous exercise for the first 48 hours after treatment, do not jog or ride a bicycle for 1 week after treatment.
-
You are encouraged to walk for 30 minutes after the treatment and every day for the next two weeks.
-
Please note that it is normal to have some redness and swelling with the appearance of “hives” around the treated veins for the first 2 days This may be associated with some itching and burning and can be treated with a non-sedating antihistamine such as Claritin/Zyrtec during the day and Benadryl at bed time. Please note Benadryl is sedating and you should not work, drive, or operate machinery while taking the medication.
-
Bruising is normal and should resolve within 1 week.
-
Veins often become temporarily discolored as they heal. They may appear purple, dark red, or brown. Sun tanning will worsen discoloration and cause them to last longer or even become permanent. Avoid sun exposure completely until the treated area return to your normal skin color.
-
Some people develop a firm lump in a vein that may appear purple through the skin, usually 2 weeks after treatment. This is a non-dangerous, superficial accumulation of trapped blood that can easily be treated in the office. Please make an appointment for it to be evaluated.
-
Painful areas, expanding redness/ swelling, blistering, or leg swelling should be immediately reported to your doctor.
-
It may take up to 6 weeks for treated veins to improve. The appearance immediately after treatment can often look worse than prior to treatment.
-
Avoid blood thinners (NSAIDS (Aleve, Naproxen, Ibuprofen, Motrin), Aspirin, Vitamin E, fish oil, Ginko Biloba, St Johns Wart, Ginseng, and Garlic for 3-4 days following procedure (ask your doctor first if these are prescribed by your doctor)
-
You cannot receive this procedure if you take anticoagulants or antiplatelets such as Coumadin, Lovenox, Xaralto, Heparin, Eliquis, Plavix, or Brilinta.
